Turn the Page: Batman Year One

By far not the most recent Batman comic, it is definitely one of the most mentionable ones. Written by Frank Miller in 1988, it begins with Jim Gordon arriving to Gotham. It follows him as he learns of his wife’s pregnancy and the corruption that has taken hold of the city, even deep in Gotham’s police force. Bruce Wayne has just gotten back to his estate after decades. Instead of seeing him immediately snapping on the cape and utility belt, you see the development and emergence of the Batman. You see Bruce Wayne stumble and make mistakes as he becomes the hero of the city that took his parents from him. Gordon quickly makes enemies in his own department by becoming a star hero cop. Bruce, as Batman makes those same enemies by quickly taking down the mafia leaders and crime bosses. And so Gordon must choose to ally himself with this vigilante, or bring him in as a criminal.
Year one was wonderful and captivating. Its art wasn’t as detailed as newer Batman comics that been released but it had an amazing tone that went perfectly with the story and gritty dialogue. Year One Even included small appearances from Selina as a budding Catwoman.
It is definitely a must-read for all Batman fans and anyone curious about the origin of Batman, or even the inlfluences of Chis Nolan's Batman Begins, and Batman the Dark Knight. Check it out at your local comic store.
